A 3D dental scan in Dnipro
A volumetric image of the jaw in which you can see every root, every canal and every millimetre of bone. Five minutes in the chair, the result handed to you straight away — no referral from a doctor needed.
When a dentist says you need a 3D scan, they mean cone beam computed tomography — CBCT. The unit rotates around your head, takes a series of images and builds a three-dimensional model of your jaw out of them. The doctor can then “slice” that model in any plane and measure any distance to within a tenth of a millimetre.
This is a fundamentally different kind of information from an ordinary image. On a flat X-ray one tooth root can hide behind another, and a cyst can hide behind the jaw bone. On a 3D scan nothing hides anywhere.
When you really need one
You do not need a 3D scan for every filling. But there are situations where treatment without one comes down to guesswork:
- Before implant placement. The doctor needs to know the thickness and density of the bone at the exact point where the implant will go, and where the mandibular nerve runs. A mistake here is costly.
- Before a difficult extraction — wisdom teeth above all. It shows which way the roots point and how close the nerve is.
- When a tooth hurts but an ordinary image looks “clear”. An extra canal, a cracked root, a focus of inflammation in an awkward projection — these are typical findings on a 3D scan.
- Before orthodontic treatment — to see the buds of the permanent teeth, any impacted teeth and the position of the roots.
- Root canal retreatment. Before redoing the work, you need to understand what did not work the first time.
- Injury. A fractured root or socket wall is often not visible at all on a flat image.
The unit, and what its precision gives you
We scan on a Planmeca ProMax 3D. The key figure for a patient is the voxel size — the “grain” of the three-dimensional image. Ours is 75 µm. For comparison, a typical voxel on dental CT units is 150–200 µm. The finer the grain, the more clearly the fine structures show up: accessory canals, micro-cracks, the outline of the periodontal ligament space.
The unit has a metal artefact suppression system. If you have crowns, posts or fillings, the image does not break up into streaks around them — and that is the most common reason a scan has to be retaken.
How much radiation this is
The unit sets the dose itself, according to the patient's height and build, so the figure varies: 10–15 µSv per study. The annual dose a person receives from background radiation alone is around 4000 µSv. So a CT scan of both jaws is about 0.4% of what you will receive over a year anyway, and less than a few hours on a plane.
We do not carry out routine scans on pregnant women. If the situation is urgent and the doctor insists, the decision is theirs, and we provide shielding and the minimum protocol.

How you receive your scan
Straight after the scan — not “call back tomorrow”. Three ways, and they work together:
- A link by email to you and, if needed, to your doctor. It never expires — we have kept our patients' scans since 2022, so three years from now you can open the same link and compare.
- A USB Type-C drive — free of charge with a CT scan of both jaws. If you do not need the drive, the study costs UAH 300 less.
- A print — for a panoramic image.
The format is DICOM plus a viewer that opens without installing any software. Any dentist will be able to open the file, even if they have no specialist programs.
We take the scan and hand it over — the report and the treatment plan are made by your treating doctor, because the decision depends on the clinical picture they see in the chair. If you do not have a doctor of your own, you can show the scan to the head doctor at Houston — with a CT scan of both jaws that consultation is free of charge.

Yes. It is one procedure that goes by several names: 3D scan, 3D CT, CBCT (cone beam computed tomography), dental tomography, volumetric jaw image. In medical paperwork you will see “CBCT”; talking to the receptionist you will hear “3D scan”. There is no difference.
A panoramic image (OPG) is flat: all the teeth are unrolled onto a single plane and the structures overlap one another. A 3D scan gives you volume: any area can be viewed in three planes and measured in millimetres. A panoramic image answers the question “what is going on here”, a 3D scan answers “exactly how, and how much”.
The scan itself takes 15 to 40 seconds, depending on the protocol. With preparation and processing you will spend about 5 minutes with us. You receive the scan straight away.
No. You can come on your own, without a referral. If you do have a referral, both you and your doctor will receive the result.
Show it to your treating doctor: they will see on the scan what matters for your particular case. We hand over the link and the file; the report is written by the doctor who is treating you.
Indefinitely. We have kept our patients' studies since 2022 and the link never stops working. That is useful when a year or two later you need to compare the changes.
